Chapter 52 (
Oto Edogawa decides to stay with Tenma Hase in Kyoto, since winter break has already arrived. She discovers that Hitoshi Konoe is also being treated at the same hospital. Back in Tokyo, Haruto Kaguragi resolves to forget Oto.
Plot[]
Oto Edogawa plans to continue staying in Kyoto with Tenma Hase, now that winter break has started. Tenma's father apologizes to Oto for his wife's earlier comments. He then asks her to "look after Tenma", before heading back to Tokyo. Oto reminds someone telling her the same thing when Tenma's mother died. She realizes that "it was the same then. Tenma was always alone." In his hospital room, a nurse tells Tenma that a student from Momonozono Academy is also being treated at the hospital. She then takes him to go take a medical test.
In the hallway, Oto runs into Hitoshi Konoe, who has been badly beaten. Konoe starts weeping about Tenma's injury, to which Oto tells him to stop crying. He tries to apologize, but Oto cuts him off saying "it [is] too late for apologies." Konoe, instead, thanks her for being by Tenma and promises to go away. A few seconds later, she follows Konoe up to the rooftop, where she finds him climbing over the railing. She grabs him, not allowing him to jump. He tells her "there [is] no reason to keep living." Oto informs him that "Tenma will think it [is] his fault", if Konoe dies.
Having giving up his suicide attempt, Konoe and Oto remain on the roof for several minutes. Tenma then shows up. Konoe begins profusely apologizing. Tenma, however, is not particularly angry as he made a mistake by not believing Oto. He asks Oto if it is okay for him to "believe in Konoe one more time." Tenma calls himself "soft", though Oto smiles and says "that [is] just how you are." In Tokyo, Kaito Taira tells Haruto Kaguragi about Tenma's injury and that Oto was with him that day. Realizing Kaito's implication, Haruto replies "it [is] all over," referring to his love for Oto.
