Tsukushi: "Wh-who is this person? She sounds amazing."
Yuriko: "This is the woman Rui has loved for years. She'll be finishing her studies in France and coming home soon."
Tsukushi learns about Shizuka Todo

The sixth chapter (第6話 () ) of Boys Over Flowers was published in June 1992 in Margaret No.13.[1] It was later included in the series' second volume, which was released in January 1993. The chapter introduces Shizuka Todo, Rui Hanazawa's first love.

At a party, Yuriko Asai and her friends humiliate Tsukushi Makino, who gets revenge by pouring champagne on Yuriko. The following day at school, the girls confront Tsukushi after seeing her talking with Rui. They tell her all about Shizuka.

Plot[]

Yuriko Asai, Minako Yamano, and Erika Ayuhara embarrass Tsukushi Makino at a fancy party. After they tell Tsukushi "the exit's that way," Kirishima, a CEO, attempts to talk Tsukushi, though the girls quickly steer him away. The girls then leave to refresh their make-up in the bathroom, while a shocked Tsukushi continues to stand in the same spot. In the bathroom, Erika points out that Kirishima has lost more hair. Yuriko asserts that it does not matter if they are bald or fat as long as they "buy you lots of sparklies."

Later, Yuriko is flirting with Maekawa, when Tsukushi humiliates her in retaliation for earlier. After Tsukushi pours champagne on Yuriko, the latter informs her that "this isn't over." Tsukushi tells her to "do [her] best" and leaves the party. The following day, Tsukushi finds Rui Hanazawa at the emergency stairwell, despite him telling her he would not go there anymore. He asks her about the time difference between France and Japan. Yuriko and her friends jealously watch them through the glass door.

The girls corner Tsukushi afterwards and show her a fashion magazine. Inside she finds an article about Shizuka Todo, a Japanese girl who had previously attended Eitoku University. She is Rui's first love and will be returning from France soon. The new information sends Tsukushi into a state of shock. The girls tell Tsukushi that she has "no chance with the F4" and push her down. Tsukasa Domyoji arrives and scares the girls away, saying "the only one allowed to bully this girl is me!"

  • When Yuriko tells Maekawa her name, he comments that she is "just like a lily." Her name translates to "lily child." Tsukushi interrupts saying "Some lilies are quite ugly."
  • Tsukushi refers to herself as a "weed" again, declaring "I'm resistant to herbicide!"
  • Shizuka is seen for the first time through the magazine YY. It mentions that she won the "Miss Teen France" title. A similarly named pageant becomes a major event later on.
  • The chapter reveals Shizuka's birth year as 1973, though the series would later establish a semi-floating timeline with no set year.

  • Chapter six was first published in Margaret with a one-page illustration of Yuriko, Minako, and Erika.[2]

  • Minako's outfit is identified as being a Chanel suit.
  • Rui is shown wearing a shirt with the Nike logo on it.

  • In the English edition, Kirishima's name is misspelled "Arishima" just a page after spelling it correctly.
